we picked up an 04 wrx with a nasty rod knock for amy and wasted no time starting on a worthy engine for hauling the baby to daycare! This WRX engine build will stay 2 liters, be a daily driver, run on alcohol, and make 350+ hp at the wheels. it will have high compression pistons and run somewhere around 25psi on a stock location turbo with a lightweight billet wheel.

heres amy (and her big green eyes)

heres the TGV's and 2 liter heads. the right hole is how the TGV looks before we cut out the divider and ported it. the cylinder heads are being ported, intake, exhaust, and chambers. they are also being cut for 1mm over spacial alloy ferrea intake and exhaust valves.

heres the crank we are using for the build up. we chamfered the oiling passages, and lightened/knife edged the crank in the mill. heres the progress so far.

started some of the machine work for the engine cases...... we are press fitting dowels around the cylinder sleeves to add rigidity to the engine cases. you can see in the pictures we milled recesses into the case halves, now we need to machine dowels exactly the right size so we can press them into place..... a little epoxy will ensure they do not try to move around when heat cycled, although as long as they are properly bottomed out in the hole they cant actually move anyway.

the pistons were made incorrectly, so we had to get another set made. they should be here today, so we can get this block bored and decked.

got all my port work finished up and the valve job for the over sized valves. the valves are cut with a serdi style machine and the upper and lower angles are hand radiused into the head.

got the heads finished up..... back cut the valves, tested the valve springs, oiled everything, and installed the titanium retainers with a new set of subaru locks.

got the block back from machining. you can see how the additional material to lock in the bores turned out. The dowels are bottomed out in the recesses we cut and them machined flat when the case halves are decked relative to the center line of the crank. the small half moon machining marks in the dowels were made so the coolant passages in the stock subaru head gaskets don't get blocked at all..

buena finished up the balancing work on the rotating assembly, so we could get ready for assembly.
don't worry, we did use the other half of the rod holder on the scales, even tho in the picture it looks like its missing. Don't ya think girls that build engines are amaizing?

here we go now for the fun stuff!

everything is laid out and clean, ready for assembly. You can tell from the pictures that we couldn't help but let ryan davis participate in assembly..... pretty much everyone at the shop had a little to do with this project, even our hot service writer jax helped out! BTW, ryan no longer works at johnson so try to ignore the gay patch on his work shirt. if your looking for ryan, call jax @ 919-460-5700
