got the heads drilled and tapped for the bolt pattern on the intake manifold. made plugs from the old hardware to block off the old holes. got the heads surfaced, assembled, installed on the motor with ARP hardware, and torqued to spec.

after fighting with the rail quite a bit, i found that i could do enough machining to get the geometry correct after all. at full closed the point of contact is on the inside 1/3 of the valve tip, and at full open (.560") its on the outside 1/3 of the valve tip. this was a real pain in the ass, but i think its worth it to get it correct so that the valve guides dont prematurely wear out.

its installed and running now. fired it up and tweeked it a bit to run off the 65lb inj. the injector change was very easy to do, couple basic keystrokes adn it was tuned well enough to idle, and cruise down the street.... couple more adn it was ready for driving and fine tuning. got a small problem tho.... some chattering/rattling from the timing cover. gonna have to take the cover off and check cam thrust and ballance shaft thrust if i dont see anything obvious that i did. mabe i left a cover off or something. hopefully its a simple fix, cause the truck drives AWESOME with the 60mm turbo and 2800 stall. THIS is the way GM should have built them from the factory. i cant wait to be driving it every day.

took the timing cover off cause thats where the thesoscope said it was coming from..... sure enough timing set was loose as nuts. the fast ramp cam adn high spring pressure has the cam timing jumping jumping around at idle adn very low rpm. needs a new timing set, and i should be back on the road.

well its a little more complicated than i thought......

a replacement timing set has the same slop in the chain, and the double roller is totally different in design, so even with machine work i couldnt get it to fit. it looks like my only option is to try a tensioner..... gonna start with the dealer and go from there. susposedly GM makes something for 03 motors...mabe i can adapt the newer parts into my motor. for now i have removed the ballance shaft drive gear, and eliminated the noise, but i still have erradic cam timing from idle up to about 1500rpm. also have somethign going on with the damn starter now..... wants to click unless we throw the battery charger on it. drove it around some more this weekend, adn the tune is pretty decent already, bu ti had a couple minor leaks from teh turbo lines (oil, and coolant) that i needed to tackle before driving it all the way home. should come home tonight.

Look things over REALLY close at every thing as Im not aware of gm changing the cam location even in the late stuff. Ignore that if Im not understanding what youre getting at about the timing chain slop.
