So after some sketching and chatting over what to do with the group, I went shopping and picked up some steel, and some misc pieces we need to put this thing together.

Did a little research online and found the optimum angle for the most sun exposure in our area, is south facing at 35deg. So I cut the tops off at 35deg and shorted the total length to about 9 and a half feet. This is a good bit longer than we need but I wanted to leave it long knowing that after the presentation, ECU could cut the base off and concrete the piping 2' into the ground and the students could use it. I cut a few 1' sections and unistrut, removed the sharp edges and mounted them to the piping with strut clamps. This part was a little tricky because I needed to line everything up just right before I tacked the base with the TIG welder.

Once the ends were tacked I set up on saw horses and started working towards squaring the bottom for the stand that will allow us to roll it around while its on display for my class. Unfortunately the piping and unistrut was only available galvanized, which makes for some pretty ugly and smelly welding because of the chemicals in the coating.

Unfortunately I had to stop for today.... I ran out of argon for the welder, and didn't buy enough washers for the wheels. It's late sunday and everything is closed now..... have to pic this up again tomorrow night.
